FAQ

What is Hamaspik?

Hamaspik is a network of independent agencies that provide services and programs for people with developmental disabilities and their families.

Where is Hamaspik?

Hamaspik help and services are available in New York’s hudson valley region, including Rockland, Orange, Sulivan, Long Island, Putnam and Westchester counties, as well as all boroughs of New York City.

Hamaspik agencies are located in Monsey (Rockland), Monroe (Orange) and Brooklyn (NYC).

Who is Eligible?

Hamaspik services are targeted to residents of New York State with a diagnosis of a developmental disability and/or mental retardation before the age of 22. Even if the formal diagnosis was made in adulthood, a consumer would be eligible for MR/DD services if the onset of the condition was before turning 22 years of age.

What Services does Hamaspik Provide?

Depending on the need of each consumer & family, Hamaspik is ready with a wide variety of services to address their needs, whether the consumer is living at home, with a family care provider, or in a group-home setting.

How Can You Help Me?

Hamaspik designates specialized “Central Intake” staff to establish the initial contact with the family in need. The toll-free number is 866-353-8400. Appropriate agency staff will implement all services as needed.

How do I know if my child is eligible for Hamaspik services?

Our Intake Coordinator will take your information and determine if your child is eligible for our services according to the OMRDD guidelines. The recipient of service must have a developmental disability that is affecting their daily functioning as an independent human being.

How do I apply for Hamaspik services?

You can call our Intake Coordinator and speak to him/her during regular work hours and leave a message or email 24 hours a day. He/She will return your call as soon as possible. He/She will provide you with the “Application for Services” and assist you in completing it.

Who may contact Hamaspik to apply for services?

The consumer, family or advocate may call to apply for services. The advocate must be someone who is designated by the family and must have written consent to represent them.

How long does it take to get services started?

Depending for which service you apply. Service coordination can start once eligibility is determined and then the service coordinator will work together with you to develop an “Individualized Service Plan” where you will discuss which services are appropriate for your child. Some programs require going on the NYS CARES Waitlist and depending on the urgency of need, the service will be provided once it is approved by OMRDD.

How do I find out if Hamaspik can provide services for my child?

The Intake Coordinator will answer all your questions and determine if your child is eligible for OMRDD services. In some cases more than one evaluation is required to make that determination. All reports and evaluations are then reviewed by the Hudson Valley DDSO who will determine if they meet the eligibility criteria and services can be started.

Will Hamaspik let me know what benefits or programs my child can receive?

Hamaspik will let you know all the services available. Once you get a service coordinator, they will walk you through the entire process and will work with you to get all benefits and programs that your child is eligible to receive.

Will the Hamaspik Service Coordinator be able to represent me at meetings, interviews, and to obtain services for my child?

Each consumer gets their own service coordinator. The service coordinator will be able to represent you at meetings and interviews with your written consent.

When a baby with special needs is born, how soon can we apply for services?

You can apply right away. Our Intake Coordinator will be able to provide you with a lot of helpful information like applying for Medicaid, SSI benefits, Early Intervention and so on.

If I am not receiving any other services through Hamaspik, can my child attend your after school and school break respite program?

Yes, your child can attend our respite program. It is open to all children who meet OMRDD eligibility. If it is full to capacity we will put you on a waiting list and serve you as soon as there is a vacancy.

If I only want to access your Family Support Service Reimbursement Program, do I have to complete a full application for services?

No. Our reimbursement program has a separate free-standing application. Supporting documents to prove eligibility will have to be provided along with the original receipt of merchandise purchased or services received.
